Castle Howard, Yorkshire

Best known as the fictional home of Sebastian Flyte in the TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, Castle Howard is in fact the historic seat of the Earls of Carlisle. The estate once covered 13,000 acres and was served by its own railway station. The house boasts 145 rooms, many of which can be explored, idyllic gardens and an adventure playground.

Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, and home to the Cavendish family since 1549, Chatsworth House sits close to the River Derwent in 1,000 acres of parkland. The house contains dozens of antiques and artwork, and the large gardens receive 300,000 visitors each year. Chatsworth appeared in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and was also used in the Duchess, starring Keira Knightley.
